Concrete is a venerable mixture of cement, air, water, sand, and gravel used on just about everything under and around most houses. Typically, this includes foundations, driveways, sidewalks, porches, and patios, of course.

Patio Pavers or Concrete Patios?
Concrete is certainly a suitable material for patios and requires relatively little in way of base preparation. In addition, in ideal conditions, it can last quite a while. Concrete driveways, for example, undergo a great deal of heavy use. How long does it last?

However, experience has shown that patio pavers provide many more benefits for homeowners than a standard concrete slab. For example:
- Patio pavers are typically rated up to four times stronger than a typical concrete slab. What this means is that the patio built with pavers can support four times as much weight than a concrete version before any cracking may appear.
- The installation process for patio pavers combined with the interlocking design of paving stones means that the patio is extremely flexible and is able to disperse any pressure or weight evenly, which prevents cracking.
- Unlike a concrete slab, patio pavers have an inherent ability to expand and contract without cracking in response to changes in weather conditions.
- If a patio paver is damaged, you can easily remove the damaged paver piece and replace it with a new one. Because patio pavers consist of individual interlocking stones, each paver can be replaced as needed.
- If the foundation underneath the patio installation shifts or sinks in places, these areas can be accessed relatively easily, the base adjusted as needed, and the pavers replaced.
- Patio pavers are available in a wide variety of colors, shapes, textures, and placement patterns. This means that patio pavers are typically aesthetically pleasing and more visually appealing than concrete slabs.
- Pavers typically provide more secure footing when wet compared to a concrete slab. This minute spacing between all the individual pavers along with patio pavers with raised edges, all work to help improve grip.
- Because of their beauty and versatility, patios built with pavers have a higher resale value than concrete patios. Although concrete slabs are more common in most areas, pavers will retain more value since concrete is expensive to replace.
