Benefits Of Patio Pavers Vs Concrete Patios

Patio Pavers Vs Concrete Patios

Many homes have porches, some have decks, and there are those with patios. And, more often than not, these patios are made from concrete.

Concrete is a venerable mixture of cement, air, water, sand, and gravel used on just about everything under and around most houses. Typically, this includes foundations, driveways, sidewalks, porches, and patios, of course.

But concrete isn’t the only way to make a patio.

Patio Pavers or Concrete Patios?

Concrete is certainly a suitable material for patios and requires relatively little in way of base preparation. In addition, in ideal conditions, it can last quite a while. Concrete driveways, for example, undergo a great deal of heavy use. How long does it last?

According to Angie’s List,

“Sealants can be added to concrete, asphalt, and brick driveways. Concrete driveways are more expensive to install, but last 30 years. Asphalt is typically half the price and lasts for about 20 years.”

Patios, on the other hand, typically won’t have vehicles driving over them or parked on them for years on end. There are a few cost advantages with concrete when compared to most patio pavers. For example, standard concrete slabs generally cost less per square foot than pavers.

And, while a concrete slab may be more affordable initially, repairs or replacements will almost always outweigh the initial savings in long-term costs. Concrete slabs are prone to cracking and chipping at the edges. This can be due to weather extremes, something that’s not likely in Sonoma County, but also because of tree roots or water damage.

Patching concrete can be done, but it mars the look and finish of the slab. And it’s just a patch. Replacing all or even a portion of a concrete slab patio can be expensive, and the result is not very aesthetically pleasing.

However, experience has shown that patio pavers provide many more benefits for homeowners than a standard concrete slab. For example:

Installing or Replacing Your Patio With Pavers

If you’ve decided it’s time to trаnѕfоrm your раtіо іntо оnе buіlt wіth раvеrѕ, install a new one, you have to decide how to get it done. Because your patio and walkways аrе among thе most visible features of your hоmе that visitors wіll see, you want it to look as good as possible.

Poorly installed patio pavers, however, won’t allow your patio’s beauty to be appreciated and could lead to problems later. In addition, pavers аrе a great way to enhance your раtіо with complementary landscaping or walkways.

Also, when pаіrеd wіth thе rіght рlаntѕ, flоwеrѕ, and other ассеѕѕоrіеѕ, thеу can give уоur backyard a beautiful gathering area and surface thаt уоu wіll lоvе. All of which leads to the question of whether you should hire a professional firm to take care of the installation or do it yourself?

While it is certainly possible for non-professionals to install their own patio pavers, it is not a task for the average homeowner.

Installation, while fairly simple and straightforward, is also labor-intensive and can be physically challenging for many. In addition, because it is a process that is more involved than simply pouring concrete into forms, the potential for mistakes is greater – especially for a first-time DIYer.
